Actually that was a direct draw from the hardcover graphic novel that shipped in the Collector's edition of the game that sets the stage for the game rather than the tabletop.

Personally I prefer the storyline behind the tabletop for the 40K over the fantasy and couldn't put together a concise history from tabletop perspective. I'm sure Drakiis could as if I remember correctly he has actually written stories set in the tabletop lore.
