Vista, 7, 8, and 10 are all built on the same architecture. Each iteration is intended to be more lightweight and faster than the previous versions. MS desperately wants to avoid the XP problem going forward so they are working to make each new version worth upgrading to. Making them free to existing users is one way to push adoption forward.

Considering the organization I support has thousands of installed seats, we are not going forward with a Win10 rollout anytime soon. Getting everyone off of XP took long enough. The decision of when to move forward is above me though.

On a personal level, I have tried it and find it works well enough. I will probably upgrade to it on my desktops but not my laptops.
