Union Vote At VW Factory In Tennessee Will Send Tremors Through U.S. Auto Industry

Quote:
The secret-ballot election, conducted by the National Labor Relations Board, is scheduled for Feb. 12-14 at VW’s three-year old assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. It is the first time in 13 years that the UAW has sought the right to represent workers at a foreign-owned assembly plant.

I don't like unions, but I see them as a necessary evil. US Government is unwilling to act to adequately protect workers from the markets, as such Unions are one of the few things that keeping general population from getting pushed into "third-world" by the market forces.

Keep in mind, optimal market solution is not optimized for social justice, equality, or equal opportunity. It is optimized for profit, and if it is profitable to trap workers in "16 tons, what do I get, a day older and deeper in debt" then that exactly what will happen unless something is stopping this.
