Keep in mind the map will be large and each race will start at their own corner of sorts. So at first the economy will be entirely of your race, then allied races and only in rare occasions will trade with orcs or alfar.

Infact our first enemies will most likely be our own race or allied races. The first goal for a clan will be to claim and keep the most profitable fortress. Which will be the same goal for every one in your race.

Is there any news at all on a beta start date for DF?

No, nothing new as far as when beta starts. The devs are doing weekly Q&A's now though... warcry hosts them. Deyth from Combine is also sending in a list of questions that people gave him on his forums that they're supposedly going to answer.

Yeah I know, Q&A's great. But at least they give info every now and then that actually helps prepare you for beta.
