Well, traditionally you save your best loot for the most important fights.

If we have honorable foes that will meet us in open field combat then that would be an excellent time. Also if we are hardpressed on a siege defense and HAVE to win thatn that is cause to use your best.

Basically just use good judgement. In this setting of game gear goes around and comes around depending on how often you fight. For those of us looking to constantly be in battle we want to work our character/player skill to the point where we can defeat foes with subpar gear thereby making kills more worth it for us.

If super player A carries super loot 24/7 and super player B can beat him with subpar gear then super player B gains more from the victory.

the measurements on what gear will get the job done is all it really takes, it's a tool box really, in AOC I easily fought without uber gemmed gear, blues or purples and did just as good, it may mean firing a couple of more arrows to get the kill but with some crafty maneuvering and group support it wasn't that much harder.
