There is a problem with a US network provider for people trying to access the pre-orders and account creation. It was announced at 3pm Sunday on the Darkfall forums that they were having timeout problems with people in the US and that the preoder downloads and related sections were unavailable while they are working with the network provider to fix the problem.
Can't be it because it hasn't worked in the UK this whole week that I've been here.
I am only stating what was posted officially on Darkfall's forums. They did not state the name of the service. They did say that as of the 3pm PST timeframe that they had finished upgrading the web servers about 5 hours prior to that. As of now they are still not up and working. They also said that the pre-order downloads were halted until it was fixed.
As a note, I was able to get an account and billing setup. Last step never got through to actually pre-order it. The post on Darkfall did say that it was not a complete block on people reaching the servers, but it was a severely limited number that can get through.
Personally I think they are having server issues and are using the network service as a scapegoat. I was getting 500 server errors for a good part of the day, mainly the servers were timing out.
A new update according to Tasos the problem is apparently spotted and service should be back up by Sunday Afternoon european time...which should make it early Sunday morning US time.

On the issue we've been having connecting to our account management service, we've been talking to everyone involved all night and have a rough ETA from their network provider which should allow us to resume the pre-orders sometime today (Sunday) and to make sure that this issue never occurs again. Since there's nothing else we can do right now but wait, we'll get things ready for around Sunday afternoon (Europe). If anything changes, we'll post it right here.
Even though this was completely out of our control, the end result unfortunately affects everyone here, and we're very sorry about any inconvenience this may have caused.

Latest update from Tasos
Two major ISPs, one in Europe, the other in the US are cooperating on the issue we've been facing. We've been supporting them, and they've been working around the clock. The issue has been escalated as far as it can go, and we believe it's just a matter of time before it's solved. The minute it's done we'll likely launch the pre-orders.
We will also offer the installer and client download sometime tonight so that players will have it for launch day regardless of pre-ordering being up first.
