I don't think its staged, remember most of these people were brainwashed from small age - Dear Leader was their personal god, but not 'in the sky you talk to when you feel like shit' kind of god.
Imagine if Conservatism was a person, then one day it croaked. You'd be bawling on the streets just like them :P
